It's Not The Heat, It's the Humidity

This was my IPhone as 9:00 PM last Friday. I wish I would
of thought to take a picture earlier in the day when
it was showing 107. Also, that little teaser showing
rain for  Saturday and Sunday...total lie.
Are you officially tired of hearing about how hot and dry it is in the middle of the country??  Well, you probably aren't nearly as sick of hearing about it as we are living in it.

Last year the southern states, especially Texas was sweltering in the heat and drought.  They were kind enough to send it up north for us this year.  While we are ever so  appreciative (sarcasm) we are more than willing to give it to any other state that would want some "dry time".

Today, actually is a bit cooler at 100 degrees but the drought continues.  There are  suggestions that we might get a half inch of rain later in the week.  HHMMM...could we get that lucky??

109 degrees...that's hot!!!
BTW the 129.1 is the miles
traveled not the miles per hour.

Thought Number One -  There is the old saying, "It's Not the Heat but the Humidity".

OH PULLEEZ!!! It is the heat AND the humidity.  Hot is hot and the humidity is 72 percent this morning.  There should be no "buts" in that sentence.

Kansas has four seasons normally.....Drought, Flood, Blizzard and Tornado.  This past year we totally skipped Blizzard and concentrated on the Tornado, (Spring) Flood and now Drought.  Seems to be feast or famine around here.

My husband was traveling yesterday in central Kansas and sent me
a picture of the dashboard of his rental car.

OK, I am done whining now about the weather as I realize the whole country is having unusual weather patterns. I am curious as to the effects of drought and heat on the human brain.

Thought Number Two...I keep thinking in cliches

Yesterday, while I was reading the paper I saw an interesting story and later heard it on the news. Instead of being all...OH that's so sad (OK it is, I admit it) I immediately thought of all the cliches that fit the story.

There is a news release out of Florida where a guy feeding alligators got his hand bit off.
True story...Wallace Wetherholt, an airboat captain in Florida, was feeding the alligators by dangling fish over the side of his boat in the Everglades and a gator came up and bit his hand off. Just to show, I sick I am, the article said he was giving a tour to an Indiana family. My first thought was...there is a tour that family won't forget anytime soon. Then to make the story even MORE interesting, is the man gets arrested for feeding the alligators which is against the law in the Everglades.  He posted $1000.00 bond and will have to answer to the judicial system as well as the medical system for his total lack of common sense.

But, I digress...my other thoughts on the subject came in the form of old adages. As I am not a person that usually thinks in "cliches", this surprised (even) me a bit.

There are just so many cliches that a person could use for this story. Things like "common sense isn't all that common", or "keep your hands to yourself", "living from hand-to-mouth" "having someone eating out of your hand"(in this case, including the hand), "caught red handed" are just a few.  I am sure there are others.

But the clear WINNER....

Isn't this story the best example EVER of "don't bite the hand that feeds you."

And then I think  "Adding Insult to Injury" he is facing misdemeanor charges. How cliche?

See, now the first thing I thought was "didn't he realize gators LOVE finger foods?" You need to move to Northern California - 70 degrees and breezy. Do NOT move to Montreal - 100.4 degrees, no breeze and 62% humidity. I was sweating in the shower. Stay cool, Cheryl!

It's so true- it is the heat AND the humidity; and the combination of the two like here in Houston can make life fucking unbearable. Pardon my language but the ac is out in our car. GRRRRRRRR..............

For a boat captain in the Everglades, you would think that he would of been aware of the "finger food" propensity of gators.
I am shocked that it is that hot so far north. It still might be worth the move as you have government provided health care, don't you???
I have spent a lot of time in northern California and it is really beautiful. The cost of living there and the taxes will make it a nice place to visit but not reside.

There is hardly a day that goes by that I don't remember that you Texans had to put up with this last year. You have every right to use every four letter word you can muster as nothing is worse than AC failing you in this heat.

I heard about that guy who lost a hand to a hungry alligator, and how he was fined for illegally feeding them. I felt guilty about laughing.

Heat and Humidity is totally true...They call it the 'heat index'. I can't complain about Florida...you live here for a time and your used to it [with AC]. Besides it's pretty much the same all year round...as long as we keep the Hurricanes at bay!

May Fall bring you cool temps and no tornadoes...PLU from SSF

Ok I must be a hard so and so because I read this about the man getting his hand bitten off and I think if you are stupid enough to feed the alligator then it serves you right and getting a fine well you did it you fool.........

Now for the hear well it is not hot here so I went to peg the washing on the line and had to make sure I had my dressing gown on as it was bloody cold outside, I wear my dressing gown a lot during the winter months instead of a jacket while at home.

Hi Cheryl
I thought we had it bad here... Wow I didn't realize it was that bad out there.
We have had a few weeks of 109 on the heat index but it didn't last to long about two weeks and back to the eighties and we are getting some rain now.
Why on Earth a boat captain would feed an alligator with his hand over the side of a boat is beyond me... He must have been showing off to the people on the boat. Losing a hand would be awful. I guess they have the fines for not feeding them for this reason, they will get used to people doing it and they will get hurt.

Have a great week

You are about the nicest guy on the planet. No one else would have felt guilty about laughing. When the whole world is thinking "don't bite the hand that feeds you", you just have to admit that it is kinda funny...in a sick twisted way...sure ...but funny.

I have been to Florida when it feels like it does here and I am not sure that I would ever get used to it. You Floridians must be made of sturdy stock. I will wish you to get no hurricanes while I am wishing for us not to get tornadoes this year.

I agree...the adage "common sense is not so common" really did apply to this guy.
Cool enough to need a jacket or any additional covering sounds pretty nice. I don't know where you live but I know it isn't in the middle of the U.S. We are probably only about 6-8 weeks from having cool weather.
I love that you can hang wash out on a line. Here there are neighborhood codes that don't allow it.

I am so envious that you are getting some rain. That really is the problem. Yesterday the real temperature in Witchita was 110. Here in KC it was more around 104. We have had about a half inch of rain in the last 6 weeks. Your pumpkin patch would be dying on the vine if it was here. This is very unusual for Kansas. The crops here typically don't have irrigation as normally we have sufficient rain. We are lucky that our farm in Illinois has had some rain and isn't in danger yet. (knock on wood)
The airboat captain had to be showing off or he is the biggest dumbass on the planet. One or the other as who would stick out their hand toward an alligator's mouth?
You have a great week as well!

Yeah, the heat has been a beast! You guys have had it longer than us, we tend to be blasted and then get a little relief. The heat here tends to lighten up in August/September and July is normally our most miserable month.

Now, what kind of silly person feeds crocs from his boat in a manner that would get their hand bitten off? Just plain ummmm... yeah not other word for it... stupid. I love the "common sense isn't all that common" it really fits this situation!

I wasn't born here...but I got here as fast as I could...I spent a decade in North Texas...YUCK-Weather! I was born in No. California and I HATE FOG.

Here too...we typically start cooling down in September. Of course, this year isn't "typical". Who knows?? I remain hopeful that will happen.
Yep, stupid is a good word for sticking your hand out in front of a alligator.

Cheryl P. said...

Now that you remind me I remember your California roots. I love Northern California's weather even with the fog, I wouldn't want to pay the cost of living there. I lived in Dallas prior to moving here to KS. I didn't mind the weather as you have to be prepared for some hot summers in TX and you get a reprieve in the winter with very little bitter type of cold. Compared to the exteme hot summers and the shitty cold winters in KS, TX is better. But Texas doesn't have my little grandchildren living down the street. KS does. (the other bonus to FL and TX is they don't have state income tax...Yahoo!)

We had 33 days of rain where I live. I was about to start working on my ark building skills.
