Is There Always a Right and Always a Wrong?

Two Thoughts For Tuesday

I have done several posts in the past taunting, bitching, talking about reality based television.  For the most part I am not a fan of programs that reflect bad behavior being glamorized for the sake of entertainment.  I  sometimes enjoy the talent based shows like America's Got Talent or American Idol as long as they are on a DVR and I can fast forward  through the bad contestants. However, you might be surprised that I am writing a post about a show that is a hybrid of a game show mixed with a reality show.  I think the only reason I gave it a chance was I was curious what kind of a show Jerry Seinfeld would produce.  As quirky as his sitcom was, I couldn't imagine what his game show would look like.   Last season I caught a few episodes of The Marriage Ref and still haven't quite decided if I like it or hate it.   I will say that once I start an episode I am glued to the TV for the hour. (technically about 40 minutes because of the DVR)  Whoever, wouldn't want to find out if the husband is right or if the wife is right?

Anyway...the show has come back for a second season.  For those of you that haven't seen this show yet, here is the premise.   Tom Papa is the host who brings three (allegedly) happily married couples onto the show that have some type of disagreement that they can't seem to work out on their own. A panel of three comedians get to weigh in on who they side with.  Of course this is after a video is played explaining the conflict so the comedians can do some funny shtick about it.  At the end of the program the audience picks the ultimate winner of the night.  That person wins $25,000.00 and a billboard in their home town that says they are the person that got it right.

As far as the Marriage Ref show goes, I am finding it pretty entertaining to see what couples fight about.  How the program manages to find these eccentric people, isn't fully explained. Nor can it be explained why the judges can not come to a clear decision on who is right and who is wrong.

This weeks episode's three couples:

1. Husband's job is working as a US Park Ranger dressed as a British Soldier and he conducts a tour about the Revolutionary War.  He is so caught up in his role, he has turned a room in their house to be an authentic 1700's era tavern. She didn't realize this until she came home and her extra store room in the house had an army of redcoats drinking their ale.

2.  A Florida husband going through some type of midlife crisis is wanting to change his wife's style.  He wants her to dress younger and sexier.  Her take on it is he has gotten old and has lost his mind.  What was especially interesting about this one, was the fact he was nagging her about not looking like Cindy Crawford while he was wearing an old Tee that he had ripped off the sleeves to be a cool muscle shirt.

3.  Third couple is rapper Chub Rock and his wife.  She buys hundreds of hair extensions that she calls ponytails.  She has more than 300 of these with each costing more than $300.00 each.  She says each of them have certain look that keeps her playing different roles.  One  ponytail that she has named Venom she says  "The pony tail brings the extra YUM  to the good good." Hard to argue with that, I guess.

Is this what people fight about?

So here are my two thoughts...

1.   I lead a really dull life in terms of interesting things to fight about.

2.   I am not sure that the disagreements we have had really have a clear right and wrong.

While I certainly am no expert in the area of marriage counseling, I do have some experience being married.  After  almost 40 years of "not always being on the same page", I can't think of any disagreement that was ongoing and not settled with some type of compromise.  With that being said, my husband has never opened "Ye Olde Tavern" in our guest room, turned our backyard into a patch to grow enormous pumpkins or worn my sports bra and leggings through our neighborhood to settle a bet with his friends.  All of these things seemed to need mediation on The Marriage Ref show.

Although, I tried to think of an example of a fight that I clearly was the "winner" on, nothing is coming to mind.  Still...because this is my blog I am the one to get the billboard.

Are there things that you just agree to disagree on?

If you haven't seen the show, who do you think won the $25,000 and the billboard given the 3 examples for this weeks program?

If you do watch the show, what are your thoughts?  Is it more annoying than entertaining?

The Good for the Day....I haven't had to resort to Jerry Seinfeld for help settling any fights.

The Bad for the Day....Last week Tracy Morgan was on the panel...he came across really creepy. Hopefully he will never ever ever be a guest judge again.

The Weird for the Day......The ponytail that can bring the YUM  to the good good.

Wow, Cheryl...I don't watch that show and I'm not sure I could guess the winner. Seems to me that on a lot of these shows, my guess is always wrong. Oh well!

But loved your post and details! Click!

I tried watching it last season. It had a few laughs but mostly annoyed me. But you don't annoy me! I enjoyed your take on it. :-)

Would it be mean if I said I thought they were all losers, and not because of the fact they didn't win the arguement? :-)

I like your billboard. I think you should print it, frame it and give it to your husband for his birthday. Or your wedding anniversary! LOL

I'm so impressed that you've been married for 40 years. It's so rare these days to see couples staying together for longer than it takes to get a new reality show!

Oh I absolutely LOVE the show The Marriage Ref ! And, I would SERIOUSLY love to have a billboard in my town proving that I am right! Ahahahahhaha

this season is much better than last year!

Thanks Liggy, The person that one was the woman whose husband was telling her how to dress. Every one could relate to that one. There are so many strange shows out now, who could watch them all?

I do like the added billboard. I heard an interview that said that women want the billboard more than the money. I didn't enjoy Tracy Morgan much though. He seems crabby. The previous week I thought Ricky Gervaise was really funny.

I can see where this show could annoy people. So much is dependent on who the guest judges are. I didn't like Tracy Morgan at all this week.

I will say that I don't know where they come up with these weirdo people. Who fights over things like opening taverns in the house? I definitely waver between liking and hating the program.
I doubt that hubby would find the billboard as funny as I do.

I was reading someones blog about the lady in Texas that already has her billboard up from last week's show. I guess it is getting a lot of buzz.
You would look great on a billboard!

Bottom line in my house is that my wife is always right.

And she knows I know that, and I know she knows that.

So I guess we could save the money on the billboard and / or remodel something in the house that makes us both happy, say maybe a new roof?

I get a kick out of the ref too. Love the smart ass comments....and the pumpkin guy needs a life....so does his wife....she loves to whine.

That woman with the 300 ponytails just needs to decide who the Hello she wants to be. I can understand a little role playing, but really...

The woman in FL was and shoulda been the big winner. Her husband in his muscle shirts needs to grow up. She looks great.

Cheryl P. said...

Yes, the FL woman was the clear winner on this one. She looked great and that husband was a treating her like S***.

Chub's wife needs to find herself and stick with it. She seemingly had very strong opinions.

I'm very skeptical about these shows ... when my wife starts to tell me aout something, I usually say, "They are all actors. nothing is real." I'm not sure Muri has ever been totally wrong in a disagreement ... but I have. We have a number of things we agree to disagree about ... I don't think you make it through 40-plus years of marriage without that. I'd say that the loser is the guy who wants to reinvent his wife (reinvent yourself, already). I haven't a clue on Mrs. Chub Rock, so I'll go with the faux British soldier. What di I win?

Hi Cheryl, I love your billboard! Yes, I’ve seen the show but not this season. I was disappointed in the wishy-washy ways that the judges decided the outcome. Depending on who the guest judges were and how powerful or big a celebrity they were seemed in some ways to sway the host. Another words…it was biased. I think the winning couple for this weeks show should be the British Tavern couple. Why? So he can stock his pub with ale of course;)

Cheryl P. said...

That is quite gallant of you to say that Muri may not of ever been entirely wrong in a disagreement. Hubby and I share the "being wrong" pretty equally I think. There is a boat load of stuff we agree to disagree about. The wife that got the billboard proclaiming she was RIGHT was the Florida woman with the naggy husband. I think the audience could relate to that fight easier than the other 2 scenarios. What do you win? You have my respect and admiration for alway making smart insightful comments.

Cheryl P. said...

I think the first season did sway the outcomes according to the strongest celeb's opinion. I like the audience deciding the final outcome this year. I don't know how much of this is staged and such but the comedy is pretty funny if I just look at it from an entertainment pointo of view.

Hi Cheryl

The Yum in the Good Good just creeps me out... I'm just sayin -LOL

I am really glad to read your hubby never ran through your neighborhood with your sports bra on! I would have to agree to disagree with such an action :)

Happy Tuesday, Clicks!

Oddly enough, that isn't the creepiest thing she had to say.

We all would agree to disagree if my husband went running in my sports bra. Even the shrink that I would force him to go have a talk with.

I've seen an episode of that show, it was quite entertaining. I find it amusing that people will go on national TV with silly issues like that - who really doesn't notice the room turning into a tavern and who let's their wife really spend $300 each on hair?

Sometimes a little common sense can go a long way.

Congrats on being married so long - that's a rare treasure now-days.

Clicks for you!

I love Ricky Gervaise!

If only I had someone to argue with!

jacqui said...

Hmm...this is difficult. I do think it's important to have the extra YUM in the good good. I think the midlife crisis guy is just a moron. But turning part of your house into something strange without consulting the other owner of said house? That seems a little bigger to me. I will guess his wife won.

Cheryl P. said...

jacqui, you are the first person to appreciate the YUM. And yes, I would say coming home to rooms converted to YE OLDE PUB is probably rare But the winnnerr is the moron. I think that the audiance voted for that because he was so freakin' annoying his wife deserves $25,000 for putting up with him.

Cheryl P. said...

I agree about who would go on TV and air their silly differences yet look at the morons that have paternity tests done on shows like Jerry Springer. There seems to be a real shortage of common sense in our world.

Cheryl P. said...

Meleah, you and I seem to agree on everything. I swear if we lived close by would would be great friends. (not that we aren't great friends via cyberspace)

Cheryl P. said...

I like the added money reward and billboard. That makes it more fun. I didn't enjoy Tracy Morgan though. He sees kind of sour...crabby..something other than fun.

Cheryl P. said...

You wouldn't argue with anyone. That someone special would hang on your every word. I swear the New Jersey boys must be blind.

Annie (Lady M) x said...

Darn it! We don't have that show in the UK ..... and it sounds so much fun too! I would laugh my head off if my partner ran around in a sports bra and leggings. My ex once cycled round the neighbourhood dressed as a fairy because of a dare!

meleahrebeccah said...

Oh hell yes. And we'd spend the whole day laughing!

meleahrebeccah said...

Yeah, he does seem a little cranky these days. Although I love his role on
30Rock with Tina Fey.

meleahrebeccah said...

Ahahahah! Aw. Thank you.

Cheryl P. said...

Thats funny about the fairy costume. I would find that really funny. The girl on TV didn't find any humor in her man's bets at all. Can you pick up the episodes on the Internet? Here on the NBC.com they show all the old episodes.
