Time Has a Way Of Throwing It All In Your Face

Thought Number One:  TIME is on my mind

It's that time a year again. Daylight Savings Time.  Only this time of year we lose an hour...yes...what feels like "it's 6 AM, right???"  is now "Oh, hell,. can it be 7:00 AM already??". It could be said that  DST and I have a love hate relationship and this time of year it's the hate part. While I bask in the change when I get to set my clock back an hour in Fall and have that hour all over again...to sleep as it's 2:00 AM, after all.  I curse the missing out on it.  I did a post way back when about   George Vernon Hudson  and the history of DST. (feel free to click on those links for more information)

This year was particularly bad as I have a virus that I can't seem to kick.  Having spent the last several days in bed, watching endless TV,, I couldn't  escape all the references to time...more specifically the passage of time.  After seeing all the assorted programs that are making me feel old, it appears that I can't afford to lose hours.Seriously, I want my HOUR back.

Every time I turn around the last few days, I am smacked in the face with reminders of how time moves so quickly.

now the wild and crazy guys are
older, wild and crazy
First there was the unfortunate skit on SNL with all the people that have hosted Saturday Night Live for 5 or more times.  Ouch!! They made matters worse by having a skit with Steve Martin and Dan Akroyd doing their Wild and Crazy Guys characters. OK...that is just cruel to see the passage of time so prevalent on my TV screen.

Another passage of time...Joy Behar announced that after 16 years, she is leaving The View.  I actually couldn't care less as I haven't watch The View in years,  but it did strike me with "Has that show actually been on the air for SIXTEEN YEARS???

AND STILL ANOTHER...Valerie Harper, who is so beautiful at 73, did an interview yesterday on NBC talking about her cancer diagnosis.  This just makes me sad...incredibly sad. The Mary Tyler Moore Show started my senior year in high school and went on through the early days of my marriage. How can it be that the people that were so young (me included) who never gave any real thought to being mortal, are having to deal with their mortality...or if not their own, their loved ones? She has a wonderfully optimistic and realistic attitude.  One of the things she said   "None of us gets out alive. Don't go to the funeral before the day of the funeral."

Thought Number Two:  Too Much Time and Too Much TV

While on my 3 day sabbatical spent lying in bed, I managed to watch a movie that used Gregory Alan Isakov's song Big Black Car, that is about the movement of time.  This song was evidently used for a McDonald's commercial once upon a time. I don't have actual knowledge of that, as up until the last several days I had pretty much given up watching commercials. (hugs and kisses to my DVR)

Now that I have refreshed my awareness of watching "live" TV, I can say "I'm not a fan."  (Side Note: the only thing worse than having the flu.... is having the flu and having to watch the AT&T commercial where the guy is talking to children at the kiddy table.)

Time, really does have a way of throwing it all in your face.

Sorry you've been ill. It has been a rough cold/flu season for me too. I have had 3 colds and the flu (or a flu-like virus - since I didn't go to the doctor for an official diagnosis) since the middle of November. I did a lot of TV watching, too.

Never heard that song before. Great lyrics. Don't know if you signed up to AARP yet but I did years ago. Anyway their magazine has a shocker page. It list the celebrities who are turning 50, 60, 70 that month. There should be name for the feeling of "no she/he can't be that old already".

Yes, as the old saying goes: "Time and the tide wait for no man."

Isn't it the truth? I'm always amazed by the age of stars we grew up with, realizing, of course, I have aged with them.

I normally escape everything but not this year. I, too am calling this a virus because if I go to the doctor and describe the symptoms, they will say, "you have a virus and that will be $85.00." I prefer to wait it out...for now. Hope you are feeling good now and continue to do so.

Cheryl P. said...

Oh, yes, I definitely got the AARP card. I did see that article as well. My reaction was the same. "How could some of those people be those ages???" It is pretty interesting to see how people age. Of course, sometimes it's hard to tell if they have had work done.

Cheryl P. said...

True, true...sometimes it doesn't wait at all but runs right over us and stomps on our bodies for good measure.

Cheryl P. said...

Totally, agree. I find how some of the celebrities we grew up with have aged is interesting. I would of never thought that Valerie Harper was 73. She is really pretty. I have no idea if she has had some procedures but no matter if she has or hasn't ...she still is quite pretty.

Just for kicks, in the picture of the 5 timers...their ages are 32, 54, 56, 60, 62, 66, 67, and 69. I bet you get the 32 year old right but who do you think is the guy going to turn 70 this year?

The only reasonI like Springing the clocks ahead is because it's not DARK at 5pm anymore. Because that shit really depresses me.

I am sick as fuck too. Horrible flu. Sore throat. Fever. Chills. Terrible body aches. It's been SIX DAYS and I am NOT getting any better. UGH.

But here's to watching endless TV, in bed, guilt free.

[I've been watching a Greys Anatomy marathon on Netflix [commercial free] for the past few days, since I never saw it before, and I love watching a NEW TO ME TV series from the very beginning. However, I wasn't TOTALLY sucked into the series until Season 2. Just an FYI]

I will ALWAYS love Steve Martin and Dan Akroyd doing their Wild and Crazy Guys. But yes, it's FRIGHTENING when you truly realize how fast time goes by.

I saw that interview with Valerie Harper, and I love her so much, I sobbed through half of it!

I'm with you on that about the passage of time. I can hardly believe how long ago things were when I start watching reruns of reruns that I watched as a kid. I know!!!

And Andy Rooney sure got that right about us wanting to live long but not get old. I think if we all could grow old but stay healthy it wouldn't be so bad...but unfortunately, very few get to reach old age that way.

Anyway, I sure hope you feel better soon! You should try some silver. (But gotta watch out for the quality. Not all silver is the same). Even Dr. Oz talked about silver solutions on his show some time ago. Really does help shorten the duration of symptoms. Even helped heal my pets when they had infections. :)

I just take for EVER trying to get alert in the morning. I walk at 6 AM and now it is pitch dark. BUT you are right my friend...I should be thankful for it staying lighter longer.

I am feeling slightly better but I have to finish my taxes TODAY so it doesn't matter if I am sick or not...damn I hate deadlines.

I loved the early days of SNL and thought all of it was hilarious. I still morn the loss of Gilda Radner. I always hate to see how old some of that cast looks because I realize I am looking that old as well. Dan Akroyd and I are pretty close in age. He is just 2 months older than me.

As for Grey's Anatomy. I have watched from the beginning. About the time you think it's getting dull something big will happen. Totally, addictive.

I agree about Valerie Harper. She is so classy. I am finding it so sad but she just oozes of optimism.

Cheryl P. said...

I will have to check that out. I hadn't heard of silver. I am better today. This is really crazy as I NEVER get sick and this year I have had to bouts with stomach flu/virus.

Yes, I agree about Andy Rooneys statement. I work out like a fool trying to be as healthy as I can and when I am not feeling well it makes me crazy.

I hope you feel better quickly. How miserable both being sick and suffering through commercials.

Time shows itself to me when I see our baby and think about the future. How old we will be when he is twenty etc. makes me sad.

I love how you make me laugh AND make me think. And I love that quote from Valerie Harper. I've been in the same loop lately - namely, the oldies station has started playing 80s music (dropping 50s, so it's now 60s, 70s and 80s), and I am thinking, WTF! 80s aren't oldies! And even worse, the "classic rock" station has started playing songs from the 1990s. Ahem.

Yes, time isn't fair. This week we've been dealing with the time loss while the boat moves and a loss in the family, Woofy. Time isn't fair and it isn't fun. Right now, it sucks.

Hi Cheryl,
You and I seem to be on the same page. Time and the passing of time. I completely understand.

Thank you, Riot Kitty! WTF indeed, an oldies station that is dropping stuff from the 60 and 70s. I certainly don't think the 80s or 90s could be classified oldies. What is it with radio stations? I can't find one in all of Kansas City with a good mix of music. They play the same current pop stuff over and over and over.

Cheryl P. said...

I meant to say something over on your blog and I got side tracked thinking about Oriental. I am so sorry to both you and Wofe on the loss of Woofy. I know that is a hard loss and I am sorry you are having that happen esp. when you aren't home.
My sincerest sympathy.

That is funny that when I read your post I thought if must be something going through the air. I knew exactly what you were saying. I, also, don't want to go back and relive it all again, and I am looking forward to new adventures but still the passing of time is bittersweet. It would be nice if there was a time machine that would let us go back and visit some of the sweetest moments so we could savor them one more time.

oldereyes said...

Yeah, time sucks ... but it's all we've got. Like you, I sure to waste any of it sick. As I've said before, whoever said sixty is the new forty was probably a hopeful forty year old.

Cheryl P. said...

Hope you are feeling better today, Bud. My day doesn't feel right when I don't read one of your posts.

Ahhh ....as for time..being all we have...I have time AND a bad attitude. (Crabby Pants).

As for who said that 60 is the new forty,,,NO it wasn't a hopeful 40 year old, it was MOST DEFINITELY a 60 (something) year old in denial.

Why thank-you Bupu2... Actually, I am feeling sssoooooo much better today. Looks like I will survive.

Ok I for the most part love day light savings it is coming to an end here in Aus............I am not one of those people who reckons their body can't handle the change............what gets me is that Valerie Harper is 73 how can she be so old........lol

Valerie Harper is being so graceful and positive. I adore her.

With every passing hour, I want that hour back more desperately.

I'm glad you're on the mend, Cheryl.
Take care.

I LOVE the last quote there, although I confess there are days when I do not FEEL that quote. Yes, it is hard to see those we remember as young dying. Hard is not the word. It feels painful. In the picture Cheryl I fear you look like you are becoming buried beneath white tissue. Tell me this isn't so!

Cheryl P. said...

I waive between bouts of feeling very young and then swing over to feeling very old. It didn't help that I was feeling miserable with a virus (or whatever it was). You are so right about how painful it is to start hearing about people that you remember as young, dying.
There were Kleenex's involved but that was a white down comforter that I was buried under. I am out now and feeling good again. Yay!!!!

Cheryl P. said...

Robyn, I totally agree with you about Valerie Harper. To be that positive and uplifting during a time of this type of horrible illness is amazing. I have the greatest respect for her AND doesn't she look amazing?? I would like to think I would handle myself that well but I might just be face down in a puddle of tears.

Every year this time change throws me off for about a week or so. It's like I can't wake up. I am past the flu or whatever that was so I am feeling back to my old (on second thought let's not say old...let's say mature) self, though.
You take care as well!!!

Cheryl P. said...

I really don't mind it execpt for the first week or so after the clock gets moved up. I get up so early anyway that 5 AM feels like 4AM for a week or so. After a week or so, I do adapt.
I was shocked to hear she was in her seventies. She looks amazing. I think it is so sad that she has such a dismal prognosis.

I feel old because I remember a time when SNL was hilarious, and that has not been for a long, long time.

Also, I know what you mean about the View. I've never watched it either, but... they've all been squawking for 16 years? I'm lucky if I can hold a conversation for 16 minutes.

Cheryl P. said...

You must have an extremely good memory as it has been a REALLY long time since sNL was funny. I rarely watch it unless a specific guest is on there that I like and even then it is limited to a skit or two that is worth the watch.

I find that amazing that it has been on 16 years. I have a short attention span anyway but I can't take Barbara Walters for more than about 3 minutes...and that might be a stretch.

meleahrebeccah said...

I really miss the old days of SNL. I don't watch it very much anymore because it's just not NEARLY as funny as it used to be!

Good luck with taxes!

UGH!

I live in a place where we don't have daylight savings. The sun is literally always out, so there's no point.

Cheryl P. said...

Thanks for stopping by PeaceloveandSharpies. (BTW I love Sharpies as well)
Can't save more daylight than "always". I am curious where you live. Would there also be 24 hours of dark at some point? I really like having more daylight in the evenings with this time changed but the dark mornings take some getting used to.

but time is the only thing that is equal among all people...

Cheryl P. said...

Yes, time moves the same for all but the effects of time seem to vary so. I want to age like Helen Mirren and live as long as my 100 year old grandmother did. Still I am grateful for however it goes.
